Bringing a dog into your home is no easy decision. Any prospective owner should take time to consider the breeds that would best fit their lifestyle. If you’re hoping to have a friendly, smart, and attention-loving companion, look no further than the Samoyed.
The Samoyed’s Temperament
A member of the Working Group, Samoyeds were bred for hard work in some of the world’s coldest climates. They have long histories of working as sled dogs and watchdogs. They are extremely loyal and social, and love nothing more than being around their humans. Sammies are highly adaptable and eager to please their owners. They fare best around people, and are happy companions on outings with their loved ones.

Physical Traits and Grooming Needs
Samoyeds are medium-large dogs that are most recognizable by their thick, all-white coats that are impenetrable by cold. Samoyeds are perpetually smiling, giving them a sweet look that matches their friendly nature. They stand between 19 and 23 inches tall, and weigh between 35 and 65 pounds.
Samoyeds require regular grooming and physical maintenance. Sammies have profuse double coats. The hair on their outer coat is harsher, while the undercoat is soft, thick, and wooly. Samoyeds shed often, with two heavier periods of shedding during the year. Daily brushing is the best way to keep your Samoyed looking their best. Their nails should be trimmed every three to four weeks.
How Much Training Does a Samoyed Need?

Like with any breed, early socialization and puppy training classes will help ensure your Samoyed grows into a well-behaved adult. Sammies are smart and eager to please their owners, but it is important to lead with a firm but gentle hand when training. Making sure your Samoyed isn’t left alone for significant periods of time and gets regular exercise will keep them on their best behavior.
Are Samoyeds Good for Families?
Samoyeds are gentle, loving dogs that adore their owners. They tend to be good with children and love to give and receive affection. A Sammy will fair best in an active household, with owners that are ready and eager to include their new pet in family outings and activities. Samoyeds can become destructive when left alone for extended periods of time. They are also a high energy breed. Prospective owners should be ready to give their Sammy plenty of attention and ensure they get daily exercise.

How Social Is the Samoyed?
Samoyeds are a social breed. They are friendly and tend to be good with new people and other animals. Their signature “Sammy smile” is a welcoming and pleasant sight to anyone who sees them.
